'Million Trees' project gets boost from 4-H club 0 Reads

A national effort to plant a million trees is 25 trees closer to its goal, thanks to the Northport 4-H Chess Club.

According to 4-H youth educator Barb Duvall of the Michigan State University Extension office in Leelanau County, a 4-H club in California launched the “4-H Million Trees” project earlier this year. The project was described as a “large-scale service-learning project to plant trees across the United States to beautify America, absorb carbon dioxide and combat global warming.”

Astronaut Shares Experiences with New Jersey 4-H Center 0 Reads

Astronaut Mike Fincke visited the Somerset County, NJ 4-H Center and narrated a video of his six month stay aboard the International Space Station in 2004. Over 400 people from the public attended. After the presentation and question and answer period, Mike graciously stayed to sign photographs. He is scheduled to fly again into space in October 2008 as Commander of the International Space Station Expedition 18.

Ford Motor Company donated a 2008 F-150 Super Cab to the Colorado 4-H Foundation as the grand prize for their annual fundraising campaign. The truck, valued at nearly $33,000, will be equipped with popular options, including a flex-fuel engine allowing it run on regular gasoline or E-85 ethanol. It will be given away this fall at Metro Area Supports 4-H (M*A*S*H) Gala on October 11, 2008, to be held at the Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum in Denver.

Toyota Awards National 4-H Council $1.48 Million 1 Reads

In an effort to support over 1.3 million 4-H youth involved in environmental science programs nationwide, Toyota presented National 4-H Council with a $1.48 million grant for 4-H's strong science, engineering and technology programming. Presented this morning during the 2008 National 4-H Conference, the grant will help 4-H create new curriculum, online learning experiences and develop new 4-H water conservation programs.

OSU band member attributes his success to 4-H involvement 37 Reads

If you are an OSU football fan, chances are you have seen this guy in front of the drumline twirling a baton at a very high speed.

Stew Kitchen, a drum major for the OSU marching band, says that without being involved in 4-H, he wouldn't be where he is today.

"4-H is the best youth development program ever," he said.
Growing up in Kenton, agriculture was very much a part of his life.
